We hosted a second grade class for an after school owl program last night at the park from 4-6pm. I decided to hike Maple Ridge to Center Trail in hopes of at least hearing one of the Great horned owls. We reached the nesting site from last year (near the bench at Center Trail) and low and behold, there was intermittent hooting! Excited to hear one so close, we crept down the trail a little further to see if we could catch a peek before dusk fell. Wouldn’t you know it, the owl was sitting on a Douglas fir branch about 25 feet off the ground. She was keeping watch over the trail. We oohed and ahhed for a while as dusk fell before running back to the nature center to rub it in to the other group who walked right underneath the GHO minutes earlier

Mossy Maple by Adam Sawyer
A park visitor by the name of Adam Sawyer attended a hike about a month or so ago about identifying trees in the winter. We spoke briefly and he took some photos for an online article. The website for Craigmore Creations features fun things for families in the Portland area to do outdoors, and Tryon is obviously a great fit! The article was recently published on the their website. I invite you to give it a read!
